The long tradition of Canarian wrestling (known as “lucha”) represents a cornerstone of the Fuerteventura community’s sense of belonging and community. It is no less important for Miguel and his daughter, Mariana: he has been a wrestler for decades, she an aspiring wrestler, and they must prepare for the final championships through grueling tests of strength and grueling gymnastics sessions. The death of Miguel’s wife, Mariana’s mother, however, brings them to another arena: that of wrestling with their own desperation and the desire to let go. And so it is that the sandy arena of lucha literally extends to the deserts of the Canary Islands, an arena where borders seem to blur and disappear beyond the sun-drenched horizons. Miguel and Mariana’s sense of loss is drowned in those landscapes: he processes his grief by becoming bitter with his daughter, while she finds the earth disappearing beneath her feet just as she searches for her place in the world. The struggle is between surrendering to apathy or clinging to those who remain.
