A couple joins a sailboat race on the Swiss Geneva lake. They don’t speak much, but they cling to each other as if they were a safe haven against the elements, the fluctuations of the climate, the alternation of day and night. There’s a spirit that hovers through the scenes of Le lac, an oppressive silence and, at the same time, a cyclical alternation of calm and storm that invites to meditation. Fabrice Aragno, a former collaborator with Jean-Luc Godard, approaches the situation he stages as a crossroads of different possible atmospheres, at times purely contemplative, at others alluding to a painful past against which the two protagonists seem to struggle. The images of their challenge, an emblematic and Herzogian conquest of the useless, are passionate and magnetic.
