1941. After having been kept prisoners by the Nazis, Soviet soldiers are ordered a decade of hard work in the Siberian workcamps. Ivan Denisovich is one of them and is suspected of being a spy. Here he is portrayed in an extreme, difficult and wilful attempt to find some humanity left in the middle of so much horror and to cling on to it. It is a cruel tale because it is honest and it condemns the cruelty that man can show and at the same time it celebrates his courage and resilience.
The absence, at times complete, of shadows seems to imply that escaping is impossible and freedom seems to remain a mirage.

DIRECTOR

After graduating in chemistry, Gleb Panfilov quit his job at the factory to follow his passion for the cinema. After his first experiments with documentaries, his debut film No Path Through Fire (1968) won him the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival. The protagonist is Inna Churikova, who later became his wife and muse, starring in all his films. Over the years his films have been awarded in Berlin (The theme, in 1979), Cannes, and many film festivals in Russia.

A well-known architect’s trip to the Paris Airport takes an unexpected turn when a young woman forces him to listen to her story. What seems to be a flirtatious encounter changes in time, although the time line is interrupted, to become a provocative and threatening relationship. Ghosts from the past and sense of guilt resurface more easily in a non-place such as an airport and during a conversation with a stranger. The film seems to tell us that there is no such thing as fate. There is a cosmic order; from this idea comes the title of the novel on which the film is based. The threads of the plot are weaved together to then be undone and become visible.

DIRECTOR

Kike Maíllo, approached film making through TV series: from 2009 to 2012 she filmed the animation series Arròs covat. Her first science fiction feature film Eva (2011) was awarded several prizes such as that for Best New Director at the Goya Awards in 2012. After having established her own production company Sábado Películas, she made her second feature film, Toro (2016). She has recently directed some episodes of the Netflix series Alma created by Sergio Sánchez.

Benedetta Carlini’s process to become a nun starts as a little girl in Pescia, in Tuscany. Her repeated mystic visions and stigmata win her popularity within her community. However, once she enters the convent, her passionate relationship with Bartolomea, who is there to find shelter from her abusive father, will change her future, and her popularity within the community starts to waver. Good and evil, paradise and hell coexist in the controversial figure of the nun, who towers over an incredibly spectacular story, which the Dutch director spectacularises.

In a car, driving from Berlin to Switzerland through Italy and Greece, there are Martha, her father Kurt, and her best friend Betty. The reason for the trip is the assisted suicide of Kurt, a terminally ill man. United by the same, painful destination, each of them deals with their own personal trip made of fear, concern and solitude. It is a road movie, not too dramatic, and a therapeutic itinerary also for the audience.

DIRECTOR

Nana Neul (Bielefeld 1974 – Germany) completed her film making studies in the year 2000 at the Kunsthochschule für Medien in Cologne. She started developing the script of ‘Mein Freund aus Faro’, her first feature film, at the Drehbuchwerkstatt in 2003 in Munich.

It‘s high summer in the middle of nowhere, Mecklenburg, Germany. Five houses, one bus stop, cows, and nothing but fields. Twenty-four-year-old Christin (Saskia Rosendahl) lives on the farm of her long-term boyfriend Jan, twenty-five (Rick Okon). The exciting post-reunification years that defined her childhood are long gone. Her relationship is loveless. Her father drinks. Christin, too, keeps the cherry liqueur under her car seat. In the shimmering heat of summer, time seems to stand still – until forty-six-year-old wind energy engineer Klaus (Godehard Giese) arrives from Hamburg and sets the world spinning again.
