ARTISTIC DIRECTION
Alessandro Rais
Historian of Cinema, Film Critic, he has carried out more than thirty years of activity as Technical Manager within the Sicilian Regional Administration in the specific role of “Historical Expert of Cinema”, directing the Sicilian Regional Film Library, and then activating for the first time the Sicilia Film Commission in 2007 and directing it, albeit with some intervals, for several years, until his retirement in 2020.
He has to his credit the creation and artistic direction of several Film Festivals: just mention the “Sicilia Queer Filmfest” which he founded in 2010 and directed for the first two editions: and “L’Immagine Leggera”, a pioneering international festival of experimental cinema , video art and new media, which he conceived and directed in Palermo from 1996 to 2001.
He has curated numerous important retrospectives and cinematographic events. He was the creator and curator of the historic project “Cinema. Lezioni Siciliane”, articulated in extensive theoretical-practical seminars held in Palermo by Italian and foreign masters of contemporary cinema, and in extensive retrospectives on their work: involving – between 1994 and 2006 – international authors such as Raùl Ruiz , Abbas Kiarostami, Frederick Wiseman, Robert Guédiguian, Vittorio De Seta, Gianni Amelio, Luciano Emmer and Giuseppe Lanci.
He was a contract professor for the teaching of “Contemporary Cinema Scenarios” (L/ART 05) at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Palermo from 2004 to 2009.
He organized and curated the first complete retrospective of the cinema of Vittorio De Seta (1995), overseeing the publication of the first monographic volume (published in Italian and English) dedicated to the director: The cinema of Vittorio De SetaThe films of Vittorio De Seta, and circulating the event internationally, among others at the Moscow Film Museum at the invitation of Naum Kleiman, and at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.
Enrolled in the Order of Journalists in 1988, and in the National Syndicate of Film Critics in 1989, he collaborated with daily newspapers such as “L’Ora”, “La Sicilia”, “il Manifesto”, and with the RaiUno “Cinematografo” programme.
