Between the end of 2008 and the beginning of 2009, Operation Cast Lead massacred hundreds of Palestinians in the span of a few days because of the Israeli army. The event left endless repercussions even years later: a heartbreaking example of this is the perception of little Amal, who saw her memories crumble after the event. From the tree she climbed with her brothers to the coffee she brought to her father in the orchard. Her family is the Samouni, farmers who live on the outskirts of Gaza City. The before, after, and during of those terrible events are delicately evoked by documentary filmmaker Stefano Savona, yet without sacrificing any part of the story. Simone Massi’s animation is not little Amal’s imagination, but the moment when the knife of memory sinks deeper into the real wound of a decimated family that must find strength to move forward.
DIRECTORY

Born in Palermo but living in Paris, he is a highly successful documentary filmmaker at European festivals: from Primavera in Kurdistan (2006) to Piombo fuso (2009), from Palazzo delle Aquile (2011), co-directed by Alessia Porto and Ester Paratore, to Tahrir (2011), his camera has touched the most disparate subjects, in the deepest corners of Italy and the Middle East. His films have toured festivals such as Locarno, Berlin, Cinéma du Réel and Cannes; Samouni Road (2018) won the Oeil d’or for best documentary right on the Croisette. Le mura di Bergamo (2023), about the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in the Lombardy capital, is his latest effort.
